RIDDLES HAVE BEEN TILTING the heads of word lovers for thousands of years. I joined their ranks rather late in life. When I first became fascinated with riddles, I would read one in the morning and puzzle over it through the day. Rhyming patterns made the riddles easier to remember and more pleasant to mull over as I pondered them. Some riddles remained completely opaque to me, but more often a number of suitable answers would emerge. Ordinary words became wily and rambunctious opponents as they schemed to conceal the answer. As time went along, I found myself concocting new riddles to present to my family or friends. These riddles have become the Riddles from the Border Regions Collection. My loved ones have become quite adept at solving them and are increasingly difficult to stump. Riddles have kindled new life in my thinking. They have sparked a playful element in my interactions with others. I hope they will do the same for you.
